| Dedication to Sports Medicine and Athletic Training services comprises the core of our Sports Medicine Outreach Program. For over a decade, Clemson Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation has actively served the community by employing Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC) to perform outreach duties at local high schools and secondary institutions. | ||||
Highly
trained in the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of
sports-related injuries, these professionals provide a variety of services
to athletic programs. Acting as a liaison between the athlete, physicians,
physical therapists, coaches, school personnel, and parents, the athletic
trainer provides emergency first responder care during athletic practices
and events as well as recommendations to coaches and school administrators
regarding injury prevention and treatment. Our Athletic Trainers also conduct
pre-participation physicals, orthopedic and sports injury assessment and
rehabilitation, patient counseling and injury prevention education, physical
conditioning and nutritional education, and pre-game preparation. Upon completing
the evaluation of an injured athlete, the Athletic Trainer may refer the
athlete to a physician for further assessment or may choose to initiate
a plan of care and protocol for rehabilitation. |
||||
Some
of our practicing physical therapists also have certification in athletic
training which enhances their knowledge of sports medicine and appropriate
assessment and treatment techniques. To earn Athletic Training Certification,
the formal education requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, with
an emphasis in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, psychology, and nutrition.
In addition to this curriculum, 1500 hours of practical experience must
be logged under the direct on-site supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer
or physician to develop skills in taping, padding, equipment fitting, emergency
care, CPR, injury evaluation, and rehabilitation techniques. Clemson Sports
Medicine and Rehabilitation strives to provide the best possible health
care to student athletes which entails not only attending to their needs
following an injury, but ensuring their safety while enhancing their athletic
abilities to excel in their performance. By adopting this team approach
to sports medicine, we believe we can more effectively serve the community
while promoting the profession of athletic training as an allied health
field and an integral part of interscholastic athletics. |
